Love blossomed decades ago at Gerych’s

Richard “Rick” and Mary Jean Koblinski of Fenton fell in love while working in the greenhouse at Gerych’s Distinctive Flowers & Gifts in Fenton.
That was decades ago, after each had married their high school sweethearts, divorced, then met later for a second chance at love.
“It was a long, adventurous romance,” said Rick, 58. “Actually, Mary Jean proposed to me while on a trip with my parents. She just turned to me and said, ‘Will you marry me?’ and I said, ‘Yes!’ ”
Rick surprised Mary Jean with an intimate 25th anniversary dinner for two on Tuesday, April 12, at the exact same spot where they had met at the greenhouse decades earlier. “She was completely surprised,” said Rick. “Jon (Gerych) had prepared the space exquisitely. It felt like ‘old times,’ like we were back in our own little space so many years ago.”
“I was a Catholic, she was a Methodist, and we got married at Linden Presbyterian Church,” said Rick, with a smile. “In the afternoon, we had a reception for about 50 people at Broadstreet (Restaurant).”
The date of the anniversary party was close to the couple’s April 7 wedding date in 1991, which held special significance to the couple. The couple’s daughters, Megan (Casey) Gilbert and Nichole (James) Douglas attended the party. “We shared ice cream hummers just like we used to have at the Fenton Hotel,” said Rick.
Bringing the anniversary event even more full circle is the fact that Chef Luis Fernandes catered Tuesday’s dinner at Gerych’s, and he was the chef at Broadstreet in Linden at their reception 25 years ago. “The dinner was fabulous,” said Rick.
